Dolores Brown is remembered fondly by her family and friends. "She enjoyed life and was a truly lovely person," recalled her friend and business associate Mary Rose Mrazek. A long-time resident of Lethbridge, Dolores worked fulltime as a supervisor at the Regional Hospital prior to her retirement, raised five children, and, at the age of 56, returned to the University of Lethbridge to earn a Bachelor of Nursing degree. "That was something she wanted to do for herself, for her own personal satisfaction and growth," said Mary Rose.
Throughout her life, Dolores was physically active as a walker, cyclist, downhill skier and golfer, and she loved figure skating. She played the piano for her own enjoyment and was learning French using tapes and books. Dolores was also very involved in the community, taking delight in the Lethbridge Twinning Society and Friendship Force, an international organization that chooses individuals to travel as ambassadors for their country. "She thoroughly enjoyed the trips to interesting places, including Chile, Australia, and many places in Europe, among others," said Mary Rose.
Felt a Responsibility to Give Back
Dolores donated one-sixth of her estate to the Lethbridge Community Foundation to create a post-secondary scholarship for students who have excelled in some area of sports. "Dolores and I had gone to several of the Foundation's Dinners, and we discussed the organization. She was most impressed with how the Foundation worked and that the funds were used responsibly and appropriately," said Mary Rose. "Dolores really valued education and recognized its importance, as you can see because she even went back to school later in her own life."
According to Mary Rose, Dolores chose to start a fund with the Lethbridge Community Foundation because she felt she had a responsibility to return something to her community that would benefit others. 'She was a very caring person and thought that because she had fared very well in this community, she should give something back."
