Community Impact - Culture, Recreation & Environment

Looking Good

Each August, the Lethbridge Heritage Day Festival hosted by the Southern Alberta Ethnic Association attracts thousands of people to learn more about the many cultures that make up our diverse community. The festivities include performances as well as 60 to 100 cultural displays and food booths. As an extension of that busy day, each month of the year, one of the Ethnic Association's 25 member groups hosts a dinner that highlights the cuisine of their homeland. As part of these tasty and educational evenings, the hosting group creates displays of cultural artifacts that give visitors a view of many facets of life within the culture.

With a grant from the Lethbridge Community Foundation, the Southern Alberta Ethnic Association was able to purchase cloth table skirts to improve the appearance of their displays. "We are so pleased to have displays that are aesthetically pleasing," said Lia Robinson, Executive Secretary/Office Manager.

"We really relied on-the grant from the Foundation because we don't, get much funding from other institutions" Lia added that, because the cloth skirts are re-usable, they have cut down on waste. "We save a lot on paper, which we used to use to cover the tables and then had to throw out."

"Given our many public events, I'm sure we will have lots of opportunity to use the table skirts."
