Facilities for the Whole Community
The 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness on the University of Lethbridge campus has opened up new opportunities for fitness and recreation for all residents of Lethbridge. A combination of new and renovated facilities has resulted in a new triple gym, fitness centre, 200m indoor track, climbing wall and numerous multipurpose spaces for classes and clubs to meet.
"Although located on the university campus, the Centre for Sport and Wellness really benefits the whole community," said Deb Marek, Manager of Facilities and Services. Each year over 4,000 children from Lethbridge and Southern Alberta participate in programs that can include swimming, fitness, summer sports activity camps, pre-school programs, dance, ballet, martial arts, karate, and more. The number of community memberships continues to climb. "Currently, we have about 1,000 community members who regularly use our facilities in addition to many U of L staff, faculty and students," said Deb.
Working with an anonymous donor, the Lethbridge Community Foundation facilitated a flow-through grant of $184,000 that provided the final component to the original fundraising goal for the Centre for Sport and Wellness.
