In 1966, the nine founding members of the Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta envisioned their community made stronger through philanthropy - gifts of time and money. To make that vision a reality, they initiated a permanent community foundation endowment that would provide funding to charitable organizations far into the future. Donations, small and large, would be pooled together and invested; and grant distribution would respond to the ever-changing needs of the community.  People from all walks of life could help to create a legacy that would make as difference in people's lives.

The Lethbridge Foundation was created by an act of the Alberta legislature on April 18, 1966, and the Lethbridge Community Fund was started with a $500 donation.  Since then, countless donors and volunteers have continued the work of the founding members, ensuring a growing endowment fund (over $12 million in 2010) to improve the lives of the people of Lethbridge and surrounding communities.
